A tank of regular gasoline costs far more than a year ago. AAA’s national average held at $4.29 a gallon on Oct. 26, 2026, up 40.4% from $3.05 a year earlier. Meanwhile Brent crude fell 1.89% to $114.51 a barrel on Monday, CNBC reported, as traders weighed the risk of further Houthi attacks on Saudi energy sites against worries that high prices could erode demand.
What Changed and Why: Saudi Attack Risks Versus Demand Worries
According to CNBC, oil rallied sharply on Friday after attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militants on Saudi Arabia revived fears of supply disruptions. The Houthis said they targeted Saudi Arabia’s main airport in Riyadh and oil facilities on Saturday. Saudi authorities said Sunday they had intercepted additional missiles and drones. The airport partially resumed operations despite damage, even as the Houthis threatened further strikes. Monday’s pullback reflected concern that elevated prices could eventually reduce consumption, CNBC said.
Separately, the Associated Press, as published by Fortune, reported that Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said Tehran is still passing messages to the United States through intermediaries and has not closed the window of diplomacy. President Trump said there would not be a strike against Iran ‘today.’ The sources do not link these talks to oil prices.
Follow the Money: From Crude to the Pump
Michael Alfaro, chief investment officer at Gallo Partners, told CNBC that geopolitical uncertainty has added roughly $20 a barrel to oil prices as a risk premium. On Monday, US West Texas Intermediate futures fell 2.19% to $101 a barrel, per CNBC. A separate Brent futures series from Yahoo Finance market data showed $109.61 a barrel on Oct. 26, against $109.55 on Oct. 19, a change of 0.1%.
At the pump, AAA’s regular average of $4.29 compares with $4.30 a week ago and $4.49 a month ago. Diesel stood at $6.35 a gallon on Oct. 26, 2026, up 73.4% from $3.66 a year ago and just below its record of $6.5276 set Sept. 22, 2026. Diesel fuels the trucks that deliver groceries, so higher diesel costs can feed into shelf prices. The sources give no figure for that effect.
Our Math: What the Year-Over-Year Gas Price Means for a Fill-Up
The cost of a fill-up is 15 gallons times the price per gallon. At AAA’s Oct. 26, 2026 national average of $4.29, a 15-gallon fill-up costs $64.35. A year earlier, at $3.05, it cost $45.75. The difference, $64.35 minus $45.75, is $18.60 more per fill-up. At two fill-ups a month, that is $18.60 times 2, or $37.20 more a month. Over a year, $37.20 times 12 comes to $446.40 more. This is an illustration built from AAA’s two dated national averages, not a projection of future prices.
This Week and What to Watch
Compare your state’s average gas price against AAA’s $4.29 national figure on its gas price site. Watch for further strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure. Alfaro told CNBC that a substantial strike on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline or more refining sites could send prices sharply higher. Also watch whether diesel moves back toward its September record. Sources: CNBC; Associated Press, as published by Fortune; AAA; Yahoo Finance.
Next in the Brief: If diesel approaches its Sept. 22 record of $6.53, what happens to the cost of trucked groceries?
